Continuing with our new blog and vlog series, our Family Nurse Practitioner, Sarah, is addressing some of the burning questions our patients have. Today we’re discussing some common myths about syphilis and what your testing recommendations may be.
Did you know that syphilis is on the rise in Lane County? Now before you let that scare you, remember:
You cannot get syphilis through casual contact with objects, such as:
- toilet seats
- doorknobs
- swimming pools
- hot tubs
- bathtubs
- sharing clothing, or eating utensils
Syphilis is, however, a sexually transmitted infection that can spread both from partner to partner and from mom to unborn baby.
Because syphilis has three stages and each of the three stages of syphilis have different symptoms and treatment options, it is critical to have an open, honest conversation with any intimate partners, and to follow CDC guidelines for testing.
The CDC recommends that all sexually active adults undergo testing at least once per year, and that those who have multiple or anonymous partners should be tested more frequently (e.g., every 3 to 6 months). All pregnant people should receive syphilis testing at their first prenatal visit. Some pregnant people need to receive syphilis testing again during the third trimester at 28 weeks and at delivery.
