You stare at the pregnancy test, waiting for the result. And when those two lines appear, a thousand thoughts seem to rush through your mind at once.

Am I really pregnant? What am I going to do? How will this change my life?

Whatever your initial reaction, finding out you’re pregnant can be an emotional experience, especially when the pregnancy is unexpected. You may need time to process the news before you’re ready to think about what comes next.

Give Yourself Permission to Feel Whatever You’re Feeling

There is no single emotional response to pregnancy.

Some women experience joy and anticipation, while others feel fear, sadness, uncertainty, or even frustration. It’s also common to experience conflicting emotions, especially when you’re trying to understand how pregnancy might affect different areas of your life.

You may find yourself thinking about questions such as:

  • How will this affect my relationship with my partner?
  • Can I afford to have a baby right now?
  • Will I be able to continue school or pursue my career?

Consider giving yourself space to reflect on what you’re experiencing. Journaling, taking a walk, or talking with someone you trust can help you sort through your thoughts.

Understand Your Pregnancy Before Making Decisions

A positive home pregnancy test detects the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which your body produces during pregnancy. While home pregnancy tests are generally accurate when used correctly, they cannot tell you how far along you are or whether your pregnancy is developing as expected.

An ultrasound can provide valuable medical information, including:

  • Gestational age: Approximately how far along you are, which can help you understand your pregnancy timeline and available options.
  • Pregnancy location: Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus. This matters because an ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus, can become a serious medical emergency.
  • Pregnancy viability: Whether your pregnancy appears to be developing or if you’ve miscarried.

Sometimes, an ultrasound performed very early in pregnancy cannot provide definitive answers, and additional testing or follow-up imaging may be needed.

Understanding these details can help you move beyond uncertainty and make informed decisions about your health.
